Seaplane grommets

Does anyone have tips on covering seaplane grommets with fabric dollar patches. Should they blanket the entire grommet or should I cut the center out creating a donut type patch? I would prefer to cover the entire grommet but so far my tests have not produced the results I am looking for. Small patches, irregular shaped grommets and big fingers are making this difficult.

They look better when you cut the center out for the cup on the grommet. Always pre-coat where you intend to cut with EkoBond and wipe the excess off. Sealing the weave with glue keeps the fibers from fraying out and keeps your doilies and patches looks clean.

I never use seaplane grommets or the plain flat washer type grommets. I just burn a hole with a 3/16" soldering iron and go.
