Reinforcing tape for a PA-22 stab?

Posted: Saturday, November 2, 2013 10:32 PM Quote
Hey folks, I'm into my covering job even though I'm 300 miles from home. It's perfectly normal to cover airplane parts in a hotel room right?

I am getting ready to cover my stabs and I noticed that the "ribs" on the stab are about 7/32" wide. I have 3/8 reinforcing tape for the rest of the tail and flaps/ailerons. Should I just attempt to split some of it or should I order 1/4" reinforcing tape which will be a little wide?

Back to shrinking my first aileron.

Thanks,
Jim

It's ok to have the reinforcing tape a little bit wider than the rib.  Just don't pull the knot super tight and leave a dimple in the fabric. I use 3/8" on most tail feathers.  Also I DO NOT like using dollar patches.  I think it looks much better to run the rib tapes full length and doing so you get a cleaner and actually stronger and longer lasting cover job by having 2 layers of fabric over the ribs.
