Polishing Paint and cure time

I had an area on my rudder where I fouled up the finish with overspray.  I looked at it for a week or so, trying to decide if I should sand it down and start over when it occured to me to try polishing.  I think Dan had said something to the effect that you could do that with Stewart products.  Using the 3M perfect-it system, I wet sanded with 3000 grit then three stages of compounding and polishing with a rotary polisher.  Amazing result.  Smooth and really glossy.

I just got done masking off and painting a checkboard pattern on the elevators.  There are edges from the masking.  I should have gotten it off sooner, as I understand they will flow in some.  At any rate, I was going to try polishing this the same way.  Any idea how long I should wait to let the paint cure properly?  How long does the final curing take?
